  70. How can I do this? I'd like to just be able to copy over all my stuff
  71. from my current hard drive (a home brew with a XEBEC S1410 controller,
  72. BBDP host adaptor, and a Seagate ST225) to the Mega's internal before I
  73. sell my current one. Do I have to do things like set SCSI addresses
  74. etc.? They are currently just left at the defaults of 0, and I must
  75. admit I know very little about this side of things.

  213. Thanks a lot to those who have emailed me about my question about
  214. modem recently. Now I have one more question. I found that some
  215. of the pc's modems come with Send-Fax capability. Could Atari ST
  216. make use of this function (can ST send fax with these modem)?
  217. If I have a Spectre GCR or any IBM emulators, can I use Mac and
  218. IBM fax softwares to send fax?  I came across a fax-modem by
  219. Public Domain Corporation which they came that we can send fax
  220. if we have Spectre GCR or and IBM emulator like AT-Speed. So is
  221. this PDC modem same as those pc's modems that have send fax function?

  235.   Yes. There exists an autoboot program named SIMMFIX.
  236. The ONLY thing it does is check if the computer THINKS it has 4 MB
  237. and the MMU says it has 2.5MB. Then, it sets the MEMTOP correctly,
  238. and reboots.

  240.     - several descriptions are around of what happens then.
  241.       Some get bombs, some don't, my computer didn't do anything,
  242.       that is, the memtop wasn't corrected at all. I rewrote the
  243.       program: it jumped to the hd_init vector (or something sounding
  244.       alike) in stead of taking the real reset vector, which had the
  245.       effect that my machine (with no Hard Disk) did not reset. I changed
  246.       this, and it worked fine.

  272. for a 68hc11 cross assembler that someone has ported to the
  273. ST.  I have the source for the ibm version, but can't get it
  274. to compile on my poor little 1040, and since my C knowledge
  275. is very limited, I can't fix 'er up.

  315. if you write SunOs info onto the first blocks by 'mkfs', you will have
  316. a SunOs floppy, and if you write IBM-PC info, you will have an IBM-PC

  320. (My ST is equipped with TEAC's FD235HF, the same drive you probably have
  321. inside your SCSI floppy drive. So I can send you the data for 2HD and 2DD

  348. The Mtools package is not just a driver for the floppy drive.  It is a
  349. collection of MS-DOS style utilities which allow you to read, write, make
  350. directoried, cd, change attributes, etc.  It is much easier to use than
  351. the canned stuff Sun provides.  Also, the Sun stuff is incredibly picky
  352. about formatting floppies.  If it gets just one error, it totally aborts.
  353. I would advise formatting on a PC or your ST, and if you can compile Mtools
  354. use it.  It is really nice.

  372. (1)If your OS allows to 'pc mount', you should be able to format/read/
  373.    write/'mkfs'/'pc mount' your floppies. Most SPARCstations use 4.1.1,
  374.    which is all right.
  375. (2) Otherwise you need to add a floppy drive driver ('mtool' or something
  376.    to be 'ftp'ed).
  377. (3) As the physical formatting shouldn't be different (512 bytes/sector),
  378.     DOS/TOS, SunOs, Minix diskettes are only differently initialised.
  379. (4) Easiest way is to copy the first 72 sectors (72 x 512 bytes, that is)
  380.     from a freshly formatted DOS/TOS diskette to a file and then copy the file
  381.     to any diskette. This is equal to initialising the diskette in DOS/TOS
  382.     format. (72x512 bytes applies to 1.44 MB diskettes).
  383. (5) A minor problem remains that the Volume Serial Number (TOS's poor
  384.     equivalent is three bytes, but the locations are different) and other
  385.     info specific to the diskette will be identical to the original.
  386.     You can re-write those if you like.

  407. Others have mentioned the "mtools" package.  It can be obtained by ftp
  408. from cerl.cecer.army.mil and works quite well.
  409.  
  410. If you are running SunOS version 4.1, then you have another option.
  411. SunOS now supports MS-DOS file systems.  The file system type is
  412. called "pcfs", and it is used with the normal Unix commands, e.g.,
  413. "mount" to mount it, "ls" to list the directory, etc.  Since mount
  414. normally requires root privileges, you might need your system
  415. administrator to provide a trivial setuid root program to call mount
  416. with the appropriate arguments.  Also, an appropriate entry must be
  417. made in /etc/fstab.

  431. I must admit to being utterly confused. You see, as I've said, I've seen
  432. this work! It was working on a 4meg STE (expanded 520), running version
  433. 1.9f of the software. It wasn't GCR, but Spectre 128 as well. What's
  434. happening??!!

  437. hardware?

  494. Well from what I have read, its only the CPU that runs at 32 mhz, the
  495. other bits (buss) runs at 16 mhz.
  496. Is it not the same as these 16 mhz Turbo options for the ST, you still keep
  497. you standard Rams and Roms, ie, only the CPU runs at that speed ?.

  548. I have seen it on the c-bit this year.
  549. It was a st with x-win connected to a unix-tt.
  550. But it was not working too good. :-(

  553. On the other hand there is a programm called UW (unix windows).

  555. I think it was designed for the mac first, but it has been
  556. ported to the st by someone.

  558. After typing *UW* in the first window the host starts Unix-Windows and
  559. from now on you can use, I think about 6, windows.
  560. So I am able to work at different suns at the same time......
